We knew this would be a tough area game at Hatton. We battled with Hatton for 32 minutes. We were so proud of the girls because this was the first game we saw them play for 32 minutes. It was SOLID play too. Ann Marie had a career high of 20 points. She was one rebound short of a double-double. Every girl played a significant role in this game...whether it was on defense, or offense. Morgan finished the game off with 2 big free throws.
This was a tough game. Lexington is one of the best teams we will meet this year. They have 4 seniors that play a big role in their success. They are great shooters and drivers. We knew this would be a tough match. I don't feel as if we played to the best of our potential for 32 minutes. That leaves for a bitter taste in your mouth. I hope we will take this loss and use it the next time we face them.Ashley Rutledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13349071486589187108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9219915160128046143.post-63944209519250187912011-01-12T18:15:00.000-08:002011-01-12T18:15:07.273-08:00Mars Hill vs Woodland 42-45Addie 2
This game was very disheartening. It was a game that we should have won. We made too many mistakes and didn't finish like we are capable of finishing.
Woodland was ranked #4 at the beginning of the year but I still believe that we were the better team. This will be the game that sticks out in my head all year. However, we will learn from games like these in hopes that they will prepare us for other games.Ashley Rutledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13349071486589187108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9219915160128046143.post-9995016913388959842011-01-12T18:12:00.000-08:002011-01-12T18:12:40.776-08:00Mars Hill vs Belgreen 56-36Caraline 16
We knew this would be a tough game. We were stepping up to the former State Champions. They have an unbelievably athletic post player. She is tall and quick. Our posts held her to 17 points. I know this does not sound like a huge accomplishment but it is. They battled with her all night and it was good to see our post play step up on defense. To only lose to Clements by 12 is a great success. They have a solid ball team with some very athletic kids.Ashley Rutledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13349071486589187108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9219915160128046143.post-51130911990895843262011-01-12T18:04:00.000-08:002011-01-12T18:04:49.864-08:00Mars Hill vs Colbert Heights 59-25Addie Harrison 2
We knew they would be fast, aggressive, and fundamentally sound. Our girls hung with them and gave them as many bruises as they gave us. They played tough, smart, and aggressive. LCHS is known for their press and forcing turnovers. We broke their press so many times. The girls have been working so hard to compete with teams like these.

Noelle was 5 for 6 in the first half. She was making big plays on offense as well as defense. We loved seeing her use the left hand, make the shot and get the foul.

Caraline was our leading scorer with 17 and she played big. She made some drives that were huge.
Our guards played like a unit. They took care of the ball and played extremely tough.
Most of the girls on LC's JV squad were 10th graders.
We played with 1 10th grader, 1 9th grader, 3 8th graders, and 1 7th grader. Considering this is one of the top JV squads we were pleased with the outcome. We still have a lot to work on and we encouraged the girls to work on their fundamentals on their own but we are proud of how hard they worked together.Ashley Rutledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13349071486589187108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9219915160128046143.post-5956671912144490952010-11-20T09:32:00.000-08:002010-11-20T09:33:58.914-08:00MHBS vs. Florence 37-29What a way to start off our season with a VICTORY!
I am very proud of this team and how they pulled together for the game tonight.
We subbed in and out and we really never saw a big difference from one group to the next and that's how we want it.
However, our shooting percentage was very low. We missed too many close shots. That will happen from game to game but I am glad we stepped it up on defense to cover some ground.
I want to point on Maleah and Noelle. They may only have 2 points a piece but their defense on the bigger post players was outstanding. They got in there and battled with them and stopped their best player in the second half.

I could say something positive about every player. They all played an important role and we hope they will keep this intensity going throughout the whole season.

Keep Caraline and Bailey Jackson in your thoughts and prayers. Caraline hurt her knee last night. She will find something out soon about it and we will keep you posted. Bailey J will stay off her knee for 2 weeks. Hopefully, the swelling will go down and she will be back on the court. We will keep you posted about her as well.

Carley Harrison had a cyst removed a few weeks ago and has been working to get back in the swing of things going full speed. Pray for her speedy recovery as well.

Again, I am very proud of the way they girls handled themselves tonight. We know most the time the refs won't be 100% fair but we will never make that an excuse. They were very poised for 32 minutes.
Next game will be at Lauderdale County. This will be a battle. We look forward to it.

JV: 41-26 L

We knew coming into this game it would be a tough game. We pulled up two 7th graders and an 8th grader. They have not practiced with us at all. We are also missing Bailey Jackson from a knee injury. Kristin and Bailey really stepped up on offense.

First quarter was 18-0 (them)
Second quarter 10-8 (us)
Third quarter 8-10 (them)
4th quarter 8-5 (us)

As you see, we dug ourself a hole the first quarter. We played with them the rest of the way. We are proud of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter. We were scrappy and worked hard. They were athletic and had a deep bench. We did not win but we like to see players taking their opportunities and making the most of them. These girls did that. Our next JV game is Monday vs. LCHS.
We have improved so much from the first day. I am starting to see some girls ooze with leadership. Not only are they encouraging others to give their best effort but they are giving their best effort and that what being a leader is all about.

We have really been pushing the girls hard these past 2 weeks and will continue to do so. We want to be in the best shape possible so we can run the floor on the teams we play.

The girls have come so far in the past 2 weeks. Yesterday 9 out of 12 girls ran their mile under 8 minutes. Some ran it under 7:30. We can improve on that but I am proud of their effort. I love seeing them sprint across the finish line after running a hard 2 or 3 miles. I love hearing them cheer each other on. This has made me really excited about what this year has to bring. If we continue to grow and work hard like we have been these past 2 weeks then we have a lot to look forward to.

Ladies, great job and keep it up.
Parents and fans, continue to encourage these girls to push themselves everyday as we continue to push them.
The girls had a great practice today. One of the best of all summers.
The week after dead week will be our last week of basketball for the summer.
Show Choir will start up along with some other school functions and sports. We will pick up in September with conditioning until the real practices start up.

This summer has been so encouraging. Coach Helton, Coach Cross, and I all agree that we are on the right track for a successful year. We know the girls will continue to work hard and get better until the time comes to put on our game jerseys.

Coach Helton and I were eating breakfast after practice today and we couldn't quit talking about basketball. We see so much improving that this year will be promising. We still have things to improve in, but it's looking like a great year for the Lady Panthers.

I will be having player evaluations the week after next. This will give me and each player a chance to have a 1 on 1 discussion.

Keep up the good work, ladies.

Best wishes,
It's called the 25,000 point club. They have 5 months to score 25,000 points per player. It's NOT mandatory. I wanted this to be something the girls wanted to work for to prove they want to get better. It started April 4th and will end August 28th. The average amount of points they need to score a day is 170 points. A week is 1,191 points. A month is 5,000. They can get these points by going to camps, playing in team camps, shooting, dribbling, playing 1 on 1, playing AAU, scrimmaging on their own...etc. If they shoot 2's they get to 2 points for each one they make. They have been recording every shot.

For those who complete this task they will be rewarded. I can see some big changes in a some of these girls that have really stayed on top of this and I am very proud of them because it's not an easy task. At the end of July we will pick 3 winners that will recieve 1,000 points a piece. It will go to the "best newcomer" and the "most improved" and finally "the best hustler." These will be BIG accomplishments too.
Parents...Please encourage this girls to keep it up! It's going to pay off. Go out and rebound for them. This will help them get more shots in. I know they would appreciate your help and be more willing to stick it out.

At this moment they should have 15,483 points to
be on target.
Some of you are familiar with Adam's parent's house in Killen. They have a big white house and they project movies onto the side of their house. It's their own little drive-in movie. We all went out there for a movie night. On the menu: pizza, cokes and little debbies (we decided not to do a 5 course meal). Adam's grandaddy (Harrison "Ike" Clemmons) made us popcorn for the movie. We watched The Blindside. It was a toss up between that and Mulan. haha No, really the girls did want to watch Mulan. We had a great time. We let some of the younger girls that played with JV (at UNA camp) come along and they seemed to enjoy it too.
Thanks Robin and Amy Rutledge for hosting the drive-in movie. Thanks Chad Wilson for projecting it.
Jana Cross is from Loretto High School, graduated in 2006. She played basketball, volleyball and softball at LHS. She just graduated from Freed-Hardeman University with her Education degree (grades 4-8). She played basketball there for 4 years. She was an All-American. Jana and I got to play against each other in high school and we also became teammates at FHU my Senior year (her freshman year).

She will be coaching the JV squad and will be an assistant along with Coach Helton this year. She is the new head coach in softball at Mars Hill and will do a great job with that.

Jana will be teaching and helping out with the 6th grade. We are so excited to have her with us. She has already helped the posts in many ways. I know she will do great things at Mars Hill Bible School.

She also just got engaged :)
It was a 3 day camp and we stayed in the dorms. The girls really seem to enjoy getting the college experience and staying in the dorms. However, some of use had the privilege to room with some big bugs. I didn't sleep to well knowing that they were crawling around.
JV did very well. We were well over .500. Varsity played some tough Triple A teams out of Tennessee. The first 2 days were a battle but the varsity ended strong.
I on the other hand had some semi-miserable experiences. Coach Cross and I delt with a flat tire in the rough area of Nashville. Thanks to Beth, Terri and Louann for saving us on that :)

UNA camp was so refreshing. Last year we were 2-7 with our Varsity. This year we were 7-2. What a turn around! We lost to Muscle Shoals by 9 points and to Red Bay by 11 points. We played Red Bay twice and beat the the 1st game. We were also missing a few of our varsity players. I had several coaches brag on our improvement. We got to see Hatton and Lexington play and I think we will hang with them this year and have a chance to beat both teams if we continue to work hard.
We had a few younger girls come play with us on the JV squad. Mary Brooke Willis, Hannah Holt, Anna-Katherine Green (8th graders) and Abby Stutts (7th grader) helped us out in the JV games. They did a good job.

Coach Helton, Coach Cross and I really felt good about this year's summer camps. We hope to build on these positive experiences. A big thanks to the girls for all of their hard work.

Here are some pictures from Lipscomb camp.
We will keep you posted on what's going on with us. During the season, I will try my best to get this updated with stats. We will have a "Player of the week" and it will be posted on here. I am very excited about this blog. This will hopefully be something the girls can look back on when they are long gone from Mars Hill. I hope this will be helpful and enjoyable for the family and friends of the Lady Panthers.

The girls have been working extremely hard. I know GREAT things will come from this season.
Drop by and read about us; leave a comment if you'd like. We would love to hear from you.
